What happens to Abadd near the end, he seems to be malfunctioning?

Abadd seems to have trouble answering Orta's question ("why do you kill?"). The question is if he would have also malfunctioned before he realized he couldn't resuscitate his masters. Due to Abadd's strange form, I thought he might have never been finished in the Ancient Age, although that would be strange given the importance of his mission.
